Activity for Kindergarten Students
Objective

To help kindergarten students recognize and express different emotions, and develop self-awareness and social skills.

Materials Needed
  • Emotion flashcards (happy, sad, angry, surprised, scared, etc.)
  • Mirror
  • Drawing paper and crayons
  • Emotion wheel (a simple wheel with different emotions and corresponding facial expressions)
Introduction

Begin by gathering the students in a circle. Explain that today they will be learning about different emotions and how to recognize them in themselves and others. Ask the students if they can name any emotions they know and how they feel when they experience them.

Demonstration

Show the emotion flashcards one by one. For each card, demonstrate the facial expression that matches the emotion. Use a mirror to show your expression and encourage students to mimic it. Discuss situations where they might feel each emotion.

Activity
  1. Emotion Wheel Game:

    • Place the emotion wheel in the center of the circle.
    • Spin the wheel and have a student pick the corresponding emotion flashcard.
    • Ask the student to act out the emotion while the rest of the class guesses which emotion it is.
    • Discuss why someone might feel that way and what they can do to help themselves or others when feeling that emotion.
  2. Drawing Emotions:

    • Give each student a piece of drawing paper and crayons.
    • Ask them to draw a picture of themselves feeling a specific emotion (e.g., happy, sad).
    • Encourage them to include details about what makes them feel that way.
Group Sharing

Invite students to share their drawings with the class. Ask them to explain their picture and the emotion they chose. Encourage classmates to ask questions or share similar experiences.

Reflection

Conclude the activity by discussing the importance of recognizing and expressing emotions. Ask students how they can help a friend who is feeling sad or scared. Reinforce the idea that all emotions are okay and that talking about them can help us understand ourselves and others better. Encourage students to use what they've learned in their daily interactions.
