Transcript text: Action Plan Outline: Veterans with Service Dogs
Introduction:
- Many veterans struggle with mental and physical health issues after and during service.
- Likewise, there are many good dogs that sit in shelters due to the low demand for shelter dogs, as well as the rise of breeders.
- By offering proper training, many dogs can be used as ESA or even service dogs, lowering the shelter population as we support veterans mental health problems
Needs Assessment
- Find organizations that would be willing to train these animals to make sure they are properly suited for the job
- Need to come up with some sort of assessment to determine what dogs would be fitted for the training, and which dogs
- Figure out how and who would be wanting to participate in aid program, and what our specific demographic would be
Action Steps
- Establish partnership with local training organizations
- establish partnership with local VA offices, and other veteran mental health organizations
- Create a system the values dogs based on their characteristics
- Create a quiz like program that matches dogs to a veteran that fits for both the veteran and the animal
- Create social media presents to help spread the words
- Create a campaign to help relay information to people who may not have access to the internet
- Provide a schedule to make sure connection between the two is beneficial for both parties
Evaluation and Monitoring
- Provide check-ins for both parties to gather information
- Helps provide a peaceful transition for both parties
- Provide financial support as well as emotional ones
Challenges
- Finding specific companies that will help provide accessible training specific to veterans' needs
- Continuing financial support so that it is not a burden on veterans
