He looked at me so-and I at him-and I knew now why Richard had believed him, and why others had believed him. It was his eyes. They were luminous, brilliant, so intensely alive and sincere that all one's instincts responded to him and to his belief in himself.
"My dear," I said, "that is not true. Mr. Parnell is dead. You are-"
"I am Parnell!" he said. "I am Parnell!" Impatiently. "I have told you so, and others have told you so. Why do you not believe me?"
I looked at him, wondering. He was so sure, so absolutely convinced. And all at once I found myself wondering, too. Was it possible? Could it be true? Had Parnell, after all, escaped death and returned? The eyes, the voice, the manner-they were, as Richard had said, uncannily like Parnell's. Was this some amazing reincarnation? Or was I seeing ghosts?
