Transcript text: Atoms, Ions and Molecules
In the table below, there are descriptions of an experiment on samples of three different chemical compounds. Decide whether the compound is ionic or molecular, if you can. If there is not enough information to decide, choose can't decide in the third column.

\hline compound & \multicolumn{1}{c|}{ description } & ionic or molecular? \\
\hline 1 & \begin{tabular}{l}
Compound 1 is a clear liquid with a strong smell. If heated gently it boils \\
at $115 .{ }^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$.
\end{tabular} & Onic \\
\hline 2 & \begin{tabular}{l}
Compound 2 is a dull white smooth solid which does not conduct \\
electricity. Applying an ordinary laboratory burner to the material only \\
makes the substance hot, it does not otherwise change. In fact, the \\
substance can't be melted or even softed by any ordinary laboratory \\
equipment.
\end{tabular} & (can't decide) \\
\hline 3 & \begin{tabular}{l}
Compound 3 is a hard white smooth odorless solid, which is insoluble in \\
water. If the flame from an ordinary laboratory burner is held on the solid \\
for 10 minutes, the solid grows hot to the touch but does not soften.
\end{tabular} & O molecular \\
